The House Fails To Get Veto Override on SCHIP. The final vote was 273 -156, 16 votes short of the necessary 2/3. Kentucky Congressmen voted along party lines with Republicans Hal Rogers, Geoff Davis, Ron Lewis Ed Whitfield voting against overriding Bush's veto. Democrats Ben Chandler and John Yarmuth voted to override the SCHIP veto.
Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel made the following statement after the vote:
“Today, House Republicans offered a number of arguments before they turned their backs on the 10 million children from working families who are waiting for health care and whose families earn a paycheck, not a welfare check. Republicans told us today they care about the poor — but I’m reminded they voted to cut $7 billion dollars from Medicaid. Republicans told us today they are concerned about spending — but I’m reminded they were willing to spend $680 billion in Iraq, no questions asked. And Republicans told us today they are concerned about government-funded health care — but I’m reminded they accept that same health care for their own children. If it’s good enough for their kids, it ought to be good enough for America’s kids. In the coming days, Democrats will not back down and we will insist on providing health care coverage to these 10 million children.”
I hope Kentucky folks remember how Hal Rogers, Geoff Davis, Ron Lewis and Ed Whitfield voted on this issue next November and send them home packing.

Monday October 8, 2007 a group of concerned citizens gathered outside of the office of Congressman Ron Lewis to protest his SCHIP vote. The News Enterprise had a reporter there taking photos and asking question and I was there video taping the protest. I told the reporter I would be happy to make the video available to the News Enterprise and would be willing to edit it and put in in any format they wanted for free if they wanted to post it on their web site. The reporter told me she would check with higher ups and let me know if they would be interested. I guess they weren't interested, because I never received a call, but it seems they were interested in paying  for a cartoon, see it below the article, that seems to depict proponents of the SHIP program as Democratic monsters.
I am calling on the blogesphere for help. Send these folks a message they will never forget. This is their site.
